We recently went to Disneyland for the first time with our kids and I wanted a special way to surprise them with the trip. Ideally we would have loved to just taken a casual drive into the city, show up at the airport tell them we surprised them with a vacation and shown up at Disneyland. However, our flight was very very early (had to wake them up at 3:00 AM!) and for young kids age 6 and 3, we felt they wouldn’t have handled that surprise quite well! So, my husband and I decided to tell them 1 week before our trip, and this is how we did it (in the video) and some other ideas to surprise your kids!
1. Surprise them with new luggage
I actually bought Braden some brand new Heys Luggage for Christmas, but ended up putting it aside for surprising him with our trip to Disneyland. He’s had some other luggage for years and years and it’s starting to wear down. I love the Heys hard luggage because it’s far more durable and can hold a lot more than the soft roller luggage that we previously had for the kids. Heys generously sent me the PAW Patrol luggage for Ethan to have for our trip. Thank you, Heys!
2. Make them custom t-shirts
There’s lots of stores online to easily make your own custom shirts to announce and celebrate your vacation, lots of Etsy sellers can come to the rescue too for those who aren’t tech or design savvy.
3. Plan a scavenger hunt
When the kids are older I definitely want to do a scavenger hunt with them and leave little clues around the house! The next big trip we will take will hopefully be Maui in 2020 and I would love to do this for them.
4. Send an invitation in the mail
The kids already love getting gifts in the mail, what a cool idea to make a special invitation for a family vacation!
5. Gift it to them for Christmas
When my parents took us to Disneyland the one and only time it was wrapped up as a Christmas gift and it was so very special for us. We knew we could start saving for our spending money and it was very exciting leading up to our Disney vacation!

Sounds like the vacation was a very enjoyable one with great memories. I have to admit, I would like to take the kids there one day. But first will be a destination wedding next winter for their very loved uncle and his fiancée. I’m sure my Cayden would absolutely Looooooove PAW patrol luggage. It’s still about the only show he actually sits down to watch. He has very little interest in any other shows.
