Our Year in Review 2012

What an absolutely awesome year 2012 was! With a few pictures and links back to posts from this year, here’s what 2012 looked like for the Schultz family!

Maui 2012

January was a very busy and exciting month that took our family to Maui for 10 days. Braden traveled really well and we had lots of fun with Nelsons and Grandma and Papa.

Braden's 2nd Birthday Party

We got back home right before Braden’s 2nd birthday and he had a Thomas party! The day after he turned 2 we ditched the soother and he did really well…I think it was harder on me!

Pregnant With Baby #2

February, 16th to be exact, brought really exciting news to our family that we were pregnant with our baby “Squishy”. My Grandma was also 2 months post stroke and doing rehab in Edmonton.
Las Vegas 2012
In March I had gave my momfession on my frustration with cloth diapering at night and at the end of the month Jay and I took an early 5 year anniversary trip to Vegas!
Abigail Kathleen
At the beginning of April I turned 29 and made a 30 before 30 list. Eight days later my beautiful niece Abby was born. Braden had the best day he ever had when a dozer and digger were working below our house and the new combine came to the farm. I had an early ultrasound and we got our first glimpses of the baby! This was a busy month! Braden also surprised us with an earlier than we wanted transition into a toddler bed and this is the hardest transition that I’ve ever faced as a mommy still!
Braden's Big Boy Room
In May I planted my first garden and we got serious about potty training. Braden did really really well with the 3 Day Method and I highly recommend it to anyone!

Potty Training Day #1

June was a life-changing month for me. We unfortunately started it off, Braden got really sick with Hand Foot Mouth Disease – I highly don’t recommend to anyone. Then the Lord called me to a Women’s Retreat and I started my first bible studies with She Reads Truth. I’ve felt such a calling to this Christian community and I’ve changed so much for the better. I also took this really cool picture of Kihei.
5 Year Anniversary
In July we celebrated 5 years of marriage, we went on our first family camping trip during a heat wave, I discussed why we decided to have our kids almost 3 years apart, and Braden turned 2.5 years! We also took our annual trip to BC and it was the starting of the falling out with my dad.
The Nelson Family
August brought on the 3rd trimester for me and my nephew Blake was born. Braden really loved his swimming lessons and I worried about being a mommy of 2 and started my early maternity leave at 31 weeks.
Seraphine Dress
In September my blog started to grow leaps and bounds and my page views went through the roof with our family’s farming video. I got my new camera, discussed my fears for my upcoming labor and delivery, spanked Braden for the first time, and openly wrote a letter to my alcoholic father. One of my most popular posts this last year was discussing how pregnancy isn’t so glamorous.
Little Boy
Braden started looking and acting more like a little boy than a toddler in October. The most exciting thing of 2012 by far was the surprise, early arrival of our 2nd baby Ethan Thomas! I transitioned well into becoming a mom of 2 but it’s definitely had it’s ups and downs. They came after he was born, but I loved having my maternity pictures done too!
Ethan's Labor & Delivery
I took Ethan’s newborn pictures myself and we had a very cute Cookie Monster & Baby Elmo for Halloween! In November I discovered that I really enjoyed the newborn stage this time aroundand discovered I have a great passion for the advocacy to breastfeed in public. Before we knew it Ethan was 1 month old and I had to remind myself not to push Braden to grow up too fast. I also decided to say goodbye to my dad until he seriously decides to turn his life around.
Ethan & Mommy
December brought me my first ever bout of mastitis and I also got Ethan checked for jaundice. Another really popular post this year was about how I felt frumpalicious with my post-partum body. Before we knew it we were celebrating Christmas!
My Family's Christmas
I’m very excited to see what 2013 brings for us!

Our First Camping Trip

It’s something I’ve wanted to do with Braden since he got here. Take him camping. I know his first summer at 5-7 months old he would have been great! We even had the trip booked…but it rained so we cancelled. That summer it didn’t really get nice until August. Last year, he was 16-18 months old and there was NO WAY I was taking that hooligan camping! That still marks the “worst” age and stage we’ve ever been through with Braden. Not old enough to listen, yet completely marching to the beat of his own drum. Did not want to sit still for a minute to eat and constantly running away – ACK! Anywho, we booked a Sunday night, Monday night trip to a campground only 1.5 hours away with a big lake…this way we could stay cool with the heat wave and the family could meet us there with the boat! (Andplusalso we could bail at any time and take the short drive home!)

The kids all had a lot of fun, everyone went tubing, and Kihei was SO well behaved. Jay had to really encourage her to come and cool down in the lake…she is not a water dog by nature!

First Family Camping Trip

I love our family pictures! The progression of Braden NOT wanting to stop his fun to take a picture and Kihei obsessively staring at a chocolate lab hoping we’ll let her go and play with it! The family came to our campsite for supper.

Then we were on our own. It was hot. I mean, really hot. 32C which is about 90F. We only get maybe 5 days in the 30′s all summer if we’re “lucky”. It’s just too hot for most Albertans, we’re not climatized to the heat and humidity like that! Here’s a summary of our evening/night:

1 – Braden and Kihei were VERY well behaved, better than I expected – especially the dog!
2 – Braden enjoying his bath in the 5th wheel, I remember this as a kid too!
3 – A bit of #SheReadsTruth camping style for me
4 – S’mores with Jay
5 – Braden and Daddy still sleeping at 9AM
6 – Braden enjoying pancakes for breakfast
So, the night. I’ll try to summarize as best I can!
  • Braden had been very excited to sleep in his Special Camping Bed….until it was time to sleep. No nap and a bedtime of 9PM, 2 hours later than usual and the kid was READY for bed yet tried to protest the same
  • 2 stories and 2 songs later, I laid with him as he was fussing, rubbed his back and he was out
  • 1:30AM I hear him cry out…but he settles
  • 1:45AM full on crying and calling out for me, I go down to settle him
  • Sing him songs, rub his back…nope! He wants to go play outside, he thinks this 4.5 hour “sleep” is it and it’s time to go!
  • I try lying with him, he says “Mommy go!” but then fusses as soon as I try and settle back in our bed
  • I try letting him play with the iPad
  • Jay steps in around 3:30 and I believe by 4AM we were all finally sleeping again
  • Braden is not the kind of kid that has ever been able to sleep with us, so I was shocked to see the boys sleeping together when I got up in the morning

So Jay took Braden & Kihei for a bike ride while I made breakfast, and then we went to the lake for the morning.
First Family Camping Trip

Jay took all of these next pictures, he’s pretty proud of himself!

I didn’t take any pictures of us playing in the lake, because I was hot, tired and didn’t want to lug around my DSLR in the sun/water. Braden had a wonderful, wonderful time and finally has the attention span to stay at the beach and play. When we went to Maui 6 months ago…not so much! We came back to our campsite, had lunch, Jay and I talked it over and were luckily on the same wavelength and decided that after Braden’s nap…we’d pack up and leave. It was just TOO HOT, no A/C in the trailer, and we really didn’t want to risk another sleepless night for all 3 of us. So I put Braden down for his nap shortly after 12, I ended up falling asleep with him for THREE HOURS which I couldn’t believe, he slept for 1 more hour as we packed and cleaned up…and then we were ready to hit the road.

You win mother nature.
TOO hot to camp for our Albertan butts!

But our “fun” wasn’t over yet. Jay’s truck has always had a problem with the coolant…so sure enough, a few minutes on the highway out of the town we camped at…Jay’s truck is overheating and we’re pulled over on the highway. The truck is spewing steam everywhere and Jay got a jug of coolant in it and we barely made it back to town. God was good to us that day, there was a gas station for Jay to buy coolant, a McDonald’s with an air conditioned play place for me and Braden to kill time, and a nice, shady tree for Kihei to stay cool under. 1.5 hours later, the truck had cooled down enough and we made it, by the grace of God, back home the 1.5 hour drive.

That was a lot of work to go camping for 1 day and 1 night! BUT, we learned a ton, I know what more to expect next time we go and we will never go during a heat wave even though the really nice, sunny weather seemed appealing at the time. We’re sure learning a lot about family trips!! You gotta learn one way or the other, right?! It kind of felt like a Griswold camping trip, but it’s one to remember forever!

Eleven Tings!

You know “tings” like my Scandinavian ancestors would say! I got tagged by the “shamazing” (as she would say!) Ashley of The Stauffer Shenanigans. I love a blog game and I’m feeling non-creative lately so I’d love to play!

  1. Post the rules.
  2. Post a photo of yourself & 11 random things.
  3. Answer the questions set for your in the original post.
  4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them.
  5. Go to their blog/twitter & tell them that you’ve tagged them.
Happy mama of a 2 year old!!

Here are my eleven random facts:

  1. I.need.coffee. in the morning. Pretty much don’t try to talk to me unless I have a cup o’ joe in my hot little hands. Also, I didn’t start drinking coffee consistently until I had Braden!
  2. Part of me would love to live in a big city with all the hustle and bustle and the convenience of being so close to everything…but I would never trade my quiet, country life for it!
  3. I would love to pursue photography as a mini-side-career only for close family and friends, but I’m too scared, I lack confidence to do it.
  4. I think I have small feet for my height. I’m 6’1″ and I have size 10 feet. I know lots of girls shorter than me with bigger feet…this makes me happy!
  5. We only had 1 boy name when we were pregnant with Braden, so when we get pregnant again, I have NO CLUE what we are going to do if we have another boy!
  6. I am so stinkin’ excited for The Hunger Games to come out in the theatres at the end of the month I could squeal! This is probably the most captivating book I’ve ever read, could hardly put it down and Jay read the whole series in about 5 days when we were in Maui.
  7. My brother and SIL are a few weeks away from becoming parents and I hate that they live 3 hours away, I really want to have a great bond & relationship with my niece!
  8. I can’t find the time for reality TV anymore. I used to be an American Idol, Bachelor, you name it addict, but now I just stick to my comedies and that’s more than enough TV for me! Buuuut I’ll probably watch Dancing With The Stars when it starts!
  9. I am scared of having a baby girl. I want one, one day…I really do, but I am SUCH a boy mom and have always found girls (of all ages) to be whiny and needy, sorry…that’s the truth!
  10. I want to be a perfectionist, but it stresses me out to no end. I want to have the perfect house: clean, tidy, laundry done, decorated…but it just ain’t happening and I’m slowly learning to accept this and be okay with it!
  11. Even if I won the lottery, I would still work. As much as I complain about it, I really do love my job and being a nurse! I could not imagine me doing any other career.
Questions from Ashley:
1. Salty or sweet, which is your snack vice?
Actually, my sweet tooth is diminishing, definitely salty as of late!

2. Why did you start blogging?
I started as a way to keep my family and friends updated on my pregnancy and my eBFF Marie was a big inspiration to start blogging and again. Now it has turned into a way to meet wonderful new friends and even make a bit of moola!

3. Who’s on your laminated card?

Call me lame…but I don’t really have one! But in spirit of my favorite show EVER, which I know Ashley, Laura, Natalie, & Jess appreciate…
  • Johnny Depp
  • Ryan Gosling
  • Matthew McConaughey
  • Josh Duhamel
  • David Beckham

4. What’s your favorite piece of jewlery?

I don’t wear jewellery. I love the idea, but I’m a horrible accessorizer. I wear my wedding set on a regular basis and that’s about it. I have lots of sentimental pieces I love. Like my “Mom” necklace Jay gave me after Braden was born.

5. What movie can you recite all the lines of?

Ha! What movie can’t I? All the Austin Powers, any Will Ferrell movie, and now pretty much any Disney movie and Thomas…sigh!

6. Favorite childhood memory?
I can’t think of one specific one! I loved the block we grew up on. Had 3 wonderful girls to play with and one of them is still one of my best friends!

7. Where did you last vacation at?
Maui! Bet you’re sick of hearing about it!

8. What blog makes you smile when you read it?
I have so many favorites but Libby’s blog always makes me smile and laugh!

9. Last concert you went to?
Josh Groban with Laura, it was great!

10. Favorite comfort meal?
My (which is my Mom’s recipe) lasagna!

11. What word/phrase annoys the bejesus out of you?

Sorry if I offend anyone, but these sayings drive me nuts:
  • “Just sayin’”
