Broccoli Salad

I’m not a salad person. Not a traditional garden salad person, anyway, but this one is one of my very favourite salads and the recipe comes from my Grandma T. The flavours are so dynamic and go so well together. I think the secret is taking the extra time to chop the broccoli into fine pieces so you aren’t gnawing on huge hunks of raw broccoli.

Broccoli Salad

You will need:

  • 3-4 cups finely chopped broccoli
  • ½ cup sunflower seeds
  • ½ cup raisins (any kind)
  • ½ cup finely chopped red onion
  • ½ cup bacon, cooked & chopped (about 4-5 pieces)
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp white vinegar

Start out by frying your bacon and letting it cool when it’s nice and crispy. Then wash your broccoli and chop into into really fine pieces, as pictured, for the best texture for this salad. This part is really time consuming, but I find it to be so worth it. Any other broccoli salad I’ve had has huge chunks of broccoli and it’s just not the same.

After you’re done chopping the broccoli, your bacon will be cool and you can chop it up into small pieces. Add broccoli, bacon, sunflower seeds, raisins and chopped red onion into a bowl that it will fit into.

Next, mix up the dressing by adding the sugar, mayonnaise and vinegar together until well blended, a small whisk works well for this. Pour over salad ingredients, mix well and chill in refrigerator until ready to serve (the longer the better, even make the day before!).

This broccoli salad is bursting with flavour! Accompanied by bacon, sunflower seeds, raisins and red onion dressed with tangy and sweet mayo! A wonderful side dish for almost any meal.
