Almost every day I ask myself when we are going to exit the picky eating stage. Braden, our 5 year old, has gone through many phases of eating everything in site, to us begging him to PLEASE JUST EAT SOMETHING! He’s getting better and better of just sitting down and eating, but his two and a half year-old brother Ethan, is another story. Luckily Braden has always loved his fruits and veggies and gets plenty of servings each day. Ethan, on the other hand, has always been picky about the texture of his foods and only in the last year started eating pieces of whole fruit, other than bananas. One way I have always been able to get food (and nutritious food, at that!) into the kids is in the form of a smoothie.
You will need:
- 1 – 1½ cups frozen fruit, some fresh in there is great too
- 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt
- ~1/4 cup of orange juice
- Optional: banana, handful of spinach (trust me, try it!)
Throw it all in a blender and serve! I have to be honest, these measurements are guestimations. I usually eyeball it and add more yogurt or orange juice if I need to for the right consistency and it depends on how big of a smoothie I make. Trust me on the spinach, it adds great nutrients like iron, magnesium, vitamin K, phosphorus, thiamine and it even has more potassium than a banana! The kids won’t taste it at all, I certainly can’t, and if they’re worried about the colour, just make sure to have blueberries or blackberries in the smoothie to make it a nice purple colour.
I’ve also been adding in IronKids multivitamins for a few months now into our daily routine. The boys love them because they are gummies, and I love them because they love them!
