It’s been almost 20 months since my dad died, and on December 11 it would have been his 57th birthday. Braden must have heard me talking about my Dad’s birthday because yesterday, we had the following conversation, and I had to write it down right away so I wouldn’t forget it. I’m so proud of my son, teaching me lessons about life at not even 5 years old and spreading the hope of Jesus in this Christmas season.
“You must be sad, Mom. You’re the only one without a dad.”
“Well, I still have a dad, buddy…he just lives in Heaven with Jesus now.”
“But I thought your dad died, Mom?”
“Yes, he did, Braden. But when we accept Jesus as our Saviour, we go to live in Heaven with Him because he gives us eternal life. Do you remember what God gave us at Christmas?”
“Yes, he gave us baby Jesus.”
“That’s right! Do you remember what happened to Jesus at Easter?”
“Yes, he died.”
“That’s right. God sent His only Son to die for all of the bad things we did and all of the bad things we might do. God loves us SO MUCH that he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross so we could be saved.”
“So you will see your Dad again in Heaven?”
“Yes, Braden. And so will you.”
I think that I will start talking to my sons about my Dad now. I haven’t known how to do this, as the last time Braden saw my Dad he was only 2. Braden absolutely loved my Dad, but I know he’s too young to remember him, and sadly Ethan never met my Dad. I showed Ethan this picture of my Dad on my phone on his birthday and said to Ethan “This is Papa Tim. Can you say Papa Tim?” Ethan happily responded: “PAPA!” And then I cried…
This is a picture of my Dad with a 2 week old Braden. He was such a proud Papa and I love that my boys and my family have a Guardian Angel watching over us until we are reunited again one day.
