This is one of the recipes I made sure I wrote down when I moved out of my parents house. My mom has come across some great recipes over the years, I’m not sure where this one originated, but it’s a family favorite and I’m always asked to make it for seeding and harvest, so I’m happy to share with you all.
You will need:
- 1 package hot (or mild) Italian sausage (I use Johnsonville)
- 1 jar pasta sauce
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 3 cups uncooked penne pasta
- ½ cup water
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese
Cook your Italian sausage according to the package, let cool and cut into bite-sized pieces. My favorite way to cook them is to broil them in the oven for 10 minutes on each size. I also poke a few holes in each sausage so they don’t explode in the oven.
Cook the pasta until just tender and then mix all ingredients together except mozza cheese in a casserole dish of your choice, I like a 9×13″ one. Next, you cover and bake at 350ºF for 30 minutes, then take it out of the over, top with your mozza and put back in the oven uncovered and cook until cheese is brown and bubbly.
I find this dish cools off quite fast so serve it while it’s hot with a Caesar salad and a nice garlic toast or something!

- 1 package hot Italian sausage (I use Johnsonville)
- 1 jar pasta sauce
- 1 can diced tomatoes
- 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 3 cups uncooked penne pasta
- ½ cup water
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- Cook sausages as you please, my favorite method is to broil them in the oven about 10 minutes per side, let them cool down and then cut them up into bite-sized pieces.
- Cook pasta until just tender.
- Put all the ingredients except the mozza cheese into a large casserole (9x13") dish; stir together.
- Cover and bake for 30 minutes.
- Add mozza cheese on top, return to oven uncovered and cook until brown and bubbly.

Hooray for pasta and baked cheese! Give this a try and let me know what you think! Don’t let the farmer fool you. He loves this meal!
