I have been talking a LOT about gifts lately, I know (’tis the season!), but I can’t not tell you about this and you’ll thank me after, I promise! One little piece of electronic heaven that every family must have is an Apple TV. If you don’t have one or you’re looking for a gift for someone – this is it, and I’ll tell you why.
This tiny little device is very affordable (currently only $109 with free shipping from Staples Canada!), and you get a lot of bang for your buck. The only thing extra you have to purchase is an HDMI cable and the rest comes with your purchase. The new Apple TV comes with the best 1080 HD content and has access to all of your iTunes account, movies, TV shows, your photos, your music, live sports and SO much more via WiFi.
If you have Flickr, YouTube, and/or Vimeo accounts you just need to sign into your accounts on the Apple TV and you have access to all your things. By far our most used feature on Apple TV is Netflix. Not sure who doesn’t have a Netflix account these days, but if you don’t it’s only $7.99 per month and you can stream hours and hours of endless TV shows and movies. The Apple TV also has an AMAZING feature with your Apple devices called AirPlay so you can stream anything off of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch directly onto your Apple TV – it just has to have the power on to work! You just flick up the control panel menu on your Apple device, select the AirPlay icon as you see in the 2nd to bottom row on the left, then you’ll see the screen on the right and you select ‘Apple TV’ et voila!
I would say that the one major downside of the Apple TV is the size of the remote. It is REALLY small, as you can tell by this picture of my 3 year old holding it! It has gotten lost…and it has been replaced! It’s tough to keep track of as an adult, but even harder when there’s kids involved! BUT one thing that you absolutely need to do is download the Remote app from the app store. This will work on your iPhone, iPad, anything that you can download apps to.
Oh the flip side for little people, our 3.5 year old can very easily navigate the Netflix menu and select his own shows all by himself. The Apple TV is also nice, small, and black and it fits just perfectly under our TV, so that is a huge bonus for us, you can’t even see it unless you’re looking for it.
