When you live a 2 hour round trip to the nearest big city, which in our case is Calgary, you have to entertain yourself at home most of the time. It’s great to get outside and enjoy the big Alberta skies during the nice weather…but in this country we have more cold days than not, and those are quickly approaching. Our entertainment budget is very low in this family…and the best source of entertainment only costs $8/month. No, this isn’t a sponsored post, I’m not being paid to brag about Netflix because I’m sure you already own it and/or have heard how awesome it is. I just wanted to share with you what this harvest widow’s (read: my husband isn’t home in the evenings during harvest for weeks on end) favorite source of entertainment!
Orange Is The New Black
I watched this Netflix original series within a week. It was ah-may-zing! I’m sure you’ve heard about it on your social media feeds and if you haven’t? Watch it! Once you get past the bit raunchiness of the lesbian sex scenes (just being real with you), the characters and the story line are SO awesome, you’ll be hooked. I love how they do flashbacks about the main character’s lives and how they got to be in prion in the first place. I cannot imagine being imprisoned – seriously! “The story of Piper Chapman, a woman in her thirties who is sentenced to 15 months in prison after she is convicted of a decade old crime of transporting money for her drug dealing girlfriend.”
Never did I ever think I’d watch a zombie show…but again, the characters and story line are just phenomenal. My brother got us hooked and when even my mom and a really nice, sweet girl like Mandy raved about it…how could I not try! With this show once you get past the gore and sound effects…someone shoving a stake through a walker’s eye will seem like second nature to you. We watched the first 2 seasons on Netflix, were so hooked we bought season 3 on iTunes and now we’re anxiously awaiting the season 4 premiere on October 13 on AMC. The only thing I’m not liking about this show is the involvement of young children…we’ll have to see where the new season takes this. “Police officer Rick Grimes leads a group of survivors in a world overrun by zombies.”
A girlfriend of mine and my mom vouched that this show was amazing, and it is. It’s a show about lawyers trying to prevent scandals in Washington, DC and Kerry Washington, the main character, is just fabulous in this series! Also? The first 2 seasons are on Netflix currently and what’s really awesome about this show and Revenge is that the new seasons have 22 episodes!!! In a series these days, that’s unheard of! Dexter, another one of our favorites, is only 12 episodes each season. This show is very well produced & it’s neat to see how they cover these scandals. New season starts October 3 on ABC. “A White House Communications Director leaves to start her own crisis management firm only to discover she hasn’t left the past behind.”
I was warned this one is a little fluffy…and it is. But I did get hooked nonetheless! This is like a well-produced nighttime soap opera with back-stabbing, love triangles, and coming back from the dead even – I can’t help myself. It’s about a rich family in the Hamptons trying to cover up the past and Emily comes to seek revenge for her father. I kind of want her wardrobe and I almost laugh at some scenes because the acting is sub-par and almost a parody like you’d see on Saturday Night Live. “The daughter of a framed executive makes it her mission to infiltrate upper Hamptons society and exact revenge on the people who set her father up.”
Best. Show. Ever. Well….one of them, anyway! Jay and I are hooked on this show. I bought the first 3 seasons on DVD before we got Netflix, we bought the 4th season on iTunes. A family of 4 adult children all up in each other’s lives, family always comes first. A very diverse cast with amazing acting. This show touches on so many life issues from adoption, to autism, bullying, illness, divorce, drugs, betrayal, business….it’s a great watch that you and your spouse will love. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next for the Bravermans. New season starts September 26 on NBC.
This is one of those shows….that you’re not “supposed” to like, but you do. Brian Cranston and Aaron Paul are phe-nom-en-al in this series. We caught up on all the seasons that were on Netflix (surprise, surprise) and have watched the last 2 seasons live. It’s amazing to see Walter White transform from a nerdy high school chem teacher into a powerful monster in the crystal meth drug empire. The last season is currently playing on AMC on Sunday nights. “To provide for his family’s future after he is diagnosed with lung cancer, a chemistry genius turned high school teacher teams up with an ex-student to cook and sell the world’s purest crystal meth.”
I don’t watch any reality shows, other than the odd cooking show, which is pretty much all there is in the summer…so I had heard a LOT of great things about Prison Break, an older series from 2005 that was (of course) on Netflix. SO GOOD! I was craving more prison life (what?!) after OITNB and this fit in so nicely. Wentworth Miller (where did he go!?) is just so dreamy and the characters are so great. Also, TWD fans…did you know that Lori is Dr. Sarah Tancredi on Prison Break? Did not realize that until 1/2 way through the first season! “Due to a political conspiracy an innocent man is sent to death row and his only hope is his brother who makes it his mission to deliberately get himself sent to the same prison in order to break the both of them out from the inside out.”
This are the shows that are on Netflix and that I’m looking forward to this fall, but other shows in our line up are The Big Bang Theory, Grey’s Anatomy (though I think it’s time for Seattle Grace-Mercy West to shut it’s doors…this show is so over done), Downton Abbey, Duck Dynasty, Dexter, and Nurse Jackie. What can I say? With being able to record our shows on our PVR…this is a great, cheap source of entertainment for us rural folks!
What shows are you looking forward to this fall? What shows should we watch on Netflix next?
All images and quotes came from IMDb. You should download the app for your smart phone…it will also help you win many arguments with your spouse on “where do you know that actor from?” and other mind-boggling questions while watching these shows 🙂
